VISION BEHIND POLTERGEIST

Though directed by Tobe Hooper, Steven Spielberg’s influence is unmistakable. Spielberg, who was working on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial at the time, played a significant creative role, fueling debates over his involvement as co-director. Regardless, this collaboration resulted in a film that achieved critical and commercial success. Released by MGM on June 4, 1982, Poltergeist became the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year and received three Academy Award nominations.

The stellar cast brought depth and realism to the film:

  • Craig T. Nelson as Steven Freeling

  • JoBeth Williams as Diane Freeling

  • Heather O’Rourke as Carol Anne Freeling

  • Beatrice Straight as Dr. Lesh

  • Zelda Rubinstein as Tangina Barrons

Heather O’Rourke’s chilling delivery of the line "They’re here" remains one of the most iconic moments in horror cinema.
